Libyan Unity Government Extends Control Over Tripoli Ministries

On Monday, 25 April, Libya's U.N.-backed unity government took control of a number of ministries in Tripoli including the ministries of foreign affairs and local government.  This push to extend control over over the capital, as reported by Reuters, is another step to establish the legitimacy of the GNA. However, the HoR has not held a vote with a quorum to make the GNA constitutional. This still tarnishes the GNA in the eyes of many Libyans and calls into question its legitimacy.

Speaking at an event to mark the handover of the foreign ministry, Mohamed al-Ammari, a member of the new government's leadership, or Presidential Council, said the transfer of power was "going well".The other ministries that have been handed over to the Government of National Accord (GNA) were housing and public utilities, transport, social affairs, local government, youth and sports, and Islamic affairs, he told Reuters.The planning, labor, and education ministries would be handed over in the next few days, he added.
