On 20 June, the United States Department of State released the “2019 Trafficking in Persons Report”, in which a section focuses on the issue of people trafficking in Libya. There have been significant records of trafficking in persons in Libya during the reporting year, according to the report, which also draws the link between this serious issue and the political and security vacuum in Libya. As a matter of fact, the report states:
During the reporting year, there were continued reports that criminal networks, militia groups, government officials, and private employers exploited migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in sex and labor trafficking. Endemic government corruption and militias’ influence over government ministries contributed to the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) inability to effectively address trafficking.
