UN Security Council Extends Authorization to Intercept Migrant Smuggling Vessels
On 5 October, the UN Security Council for Member States extended its authorization to intercept vessels suspected of being used for the purpose of migrant smuggling and human trafficking through Libya and off its coast until 5 October 2018. The resolution urges cooperation by all actors with Libya’s Government of National Accord, stating that it is:
Mindful of the need to support further efforts to strengthen Libyan border management, considering the difficulties of the Government of National Accord to manage effectively the migratory flows in transit through Libyan territory, and noting its concern for the repercussions of this phenomenon on the stability of Libya and of the Mediterranean region.
