Elections prospects in Libya: a new approach

Diplomatic sources revealed that the United nations and Western powers are gradually reviewing their approach of the Libyan crisis, focusing on local reconciliation in Libya rather than on the organisation of elections, Ulf Laessing and Aidan Lewis reported on Reuters on 7 November. The UN and Western powers were acting upon strong incentives to organise immediate elections since May 2018 and the summit organised in France by President Macron. Laessing and Lewis also reported that UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame is to present his « Plan B » for Libya at the UN Security briefing on 7 November. Salame’s proposal illustrates this change of narrative, as the Plan focuses on the organisation of a national conference in 2019 and on the implementation of measures to address the economic crisis.Click here to read the full report.
