Militia maneuvers in Tripoli while officials attend Palermo Conference

Francesca Mannocchi reported for The Middle East Eye on 15 November that while officials from Western and Eastern Libya were attending the Palermo Conference in Italy, the Tripoli Revolutionary Brigade (TRB), a powerful militia in Tripoli under the control of Haitem Tajouri, took the decision to keep banks open late at night and allow citizens to withdraw large amounts of money. This move by the TRB stands in opposition with Libyan regulations which limit the maximum monthly withdrawal amount to 500 Libyan dinars. For Middle East Eye, the leader of the TRB has adopted a new approach, presenting himself as a defender of the Libyan people fighting for its right, whereas he used to be perceived as a violent militia leader. This move by the TRB is likely to rekindle the controversy around the effectiveness of the measures taken by the Government of National Accord (GNA) to limit militia power in Tripoli.Click here to read the article.
