The role of tribes in Libya

On 18 October, George Mikhail published with Al-Monitor an article featuring an interview with Mawlay Qudeidi, the head of the Supreme Council of the Tuareg Tribes who represents the Tuareg tribe based in southern Libya. Drawing on the militia tensions which developed in Tripoli in September and on the intervention by Libyan tribes on 15 September to demand the expulsion of militias from Libya, Mikhail discusses the role of Libyan tribes in the resolution of the crisis. While Qudeidi remains evasive on the potential by Libyan tribes to resolve the crisis, he insists on the importance of the disbanding of militias and reiterates the Tuareg tribe’s support to elections in Libya.Click here to read the interview.
