UN Envoy to Libya calls for truce in Tripoli fighting

In the light of the upcoming Eid Al-Adha religious holiday the UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salamé called on 29 July 2019 for a truce between rival factions fighting in the Tripoli area, Voice of America reported. For the UN Envoy, the fighting between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and forces aligned with the Government of National Accord (GNA) risk plunging the country into a full-blown civil war. Salamé proposed a three-step plan to the UN Security Council to relaunch the political process in Libya. With the truce as the first, the proposal also includes confidence-building measures and a high-level meeting of concerned countries. Earlier this week, GNA Head Fayez Al-Sarraj declared that the GNA was open to the resumption of the political dialogue at the condition of the withdrawal of LNA troops from Tripoli.Click here to read the article.
