US opposes appointment of new Special Envoy to Libya

On 17 April, international media outlets reported that the prospective candidate for the position of UN Special Envoy to Libya, Algerian former Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra had withdrawn his candidacy. Lamamra’s appointment as the UN Special Envoy was proposed by the UN Secretary General and needed the approval of the 15-member Security Council. However, reports indicate that the Security Council failed to reach a consensus. Diplomatic sources suggest the United States did not agree to backing Mr. Lamamra, and did not justify their opposition. The appointment of a new Special Envoy to Libya has become a crucial topic, carrying the hope of the renewal of political dialogue as fighting continues to rage in Western Libya.Click here to read the full report
