On 2 February, the China Global South Project published a report by Bianca Pasquier and Leonardo Bruni, titled ‘China and the Libyan Crisis: Maintaining a Foot in the Door in a Changing Region’. The report argues that the reopening of the Chinese embassy in Tripoli back in November may signal an attempt by Beijing to expand its diplomatic room for maneuver across the region. However, it may not go beyond normalization, the authors say. ‘China’s role in Libya has often been overstated, swinging between inflated expectations and undue suspicion,’ they argue.
