On 28 June, the Middle East Forum (MEF) published an article by Ali Almrayatee, titled ‘'Is Tehran Buying Egyptian Influence to Expand Iranian Reach into Libya?' The article focuses on Egypt as ‘indispensable’ to any efforts for influence across North Africa, including Iranian attempts to establish a ‘strategic foothold in a fractured Libya with its significant oil wealth and, at least around Tripoli, its permissive security environment.’ Almrayatee argues that Egypt has economic vulnerabilities that ‘create opportunities for pragmatic and transactional engagement with Iran and its regional partners.’
