On 3 August, Middle East Monitor published a report by Mustafa Fetouri titled ‘Paying the warlords: The cynical economics of EU border control in Libya.’ Fitouri looks at the EU’s attempts to export asylum processing outside European borders, arguing that the consequences of Europe’s externalization agenda are exploding on the streets of Tripoli, Libya—one of the primary transit routes for migrants seeking to reach Europe. In particular, he highlights local protests outside the UNHCR headquarters and IOM offices, with residents protesting what they view as a deliberate attempt to turn their country into a permanent containment zone for Europe’s rejected migrants.
