Questioning Russian power in Libya

In an article in Foreign Affairs, Carnegie Endowment scholars Fred Wehrey and Andrew Weiss argue that Russian power in the Middle East is not as formidable as US policymakers tend to think. The authors argue that in Libya, Moscow has never been fully trusting of Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar (whom Russia supports). They also note that Russian interference in Libya has been stymied on several occasions by US intelligence services. Wehrey and Weiss conclude by stating that ‘Ultimately, US assets in the region are still unrivaled.’
