On 5 March, The Guardian published an article by Anas El Gomati, titled ‘Power without a throne: how Khalifa Haftar controls Libya'. The article looks at how Khalifa Haftar, general commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), controls oilfields and export terminals across central Libya, as well as the smuggling routes that feed Europe’s migration crisis and the bases that help the foreign militaries feeding Sudan’s war. ‘For Europeans confronting migration, energy insecurity and regional spillover, Haftar controls everything that matters,’ El Gomati argues.
