On 24 September, al-Monitor published an interview with US Special Advisor Massad Boulos, who dismissed criticism that the so-called Boulos Initiative to unify the country would entrench the unelected rule of the Dabaibas and the Haftars, saying this is a ‘wrong and inaccurate characterization of the truth.’ Boulos declined to confirm details of the US political initiative, claiming ‘It's not a question of power-sharing’ and that the idea is to include everyone, even in the more diverse western region. While Boulos claimed that ‘It's not about families or names,’ he went on to clarify that the Dabaiba and Haftar families ‘are individuals that have to be in one position or the other.’
