Atlantic Council publishes analysis on Haftar's 'Dynastic power and diplomatic leverage in Libya'

On 8 September, the Atlantic Council published analysis by Karim Mezran and Dario Cristiani titled ‘Haftar’s long game: Dynastic power and diplomatic leverage in Libya’. The authors note the timing of General Khalifa Haftar appointing his son, Saddam Haftar, as Deputy General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), just days before the UN announced its new roadmap to revive the country’s stalled political process. They further argue that these developments ‘may well set the stage for a potential power shift in Tripoli’, suggesting that Haftar is ‘not only shaping the current political landscape, but is also positioning himself—and his family—for long-term strategic influence’.
