On 16 May, Chatham House published commentary by Senior Research Fellow Tim Eaton, titled ‘Escalating conflict in Tripoli exposes the realities of false stability – and international neglect in Libya’. Following the killing of powerful militia commander Abdelghani al-Kikli (“Ghneiwa”) in Tripoli last week, the author argues that the recent escalation has ‘revealed the reality that Libya’s so-called stability was much more fragile than it seemed’, adding that it also ‘exposes the lack of seriousness of efforts to improve the country’s governance’. According to Mr Eaton, the Government of National Unity (GNU) has been ‘competing with Ghneiwa for control of key state institutions’.
