On 13 May, Reuters published a report titled ‘Libya clashes point to growing power of Turkey-allied PM’. Following the assassination of Stability Support Agency (SSA) commander Abdul Ghani al-Kikli aka Ghinaywa, factions under Abdul Hameed Dabaiba’s Government of National Unity (GNU) rapidly seized territory and bases long held by the SSA, including the Abu Salim district, its old powerbase. According to the report, this consolidation of power in Tripoli would strengthen Turkish ally Dabaiba and his government after repeated attempts to replace him by force over recent years while bolstering his position in an overarching rivalry with eastern Libya factions.
