On 29 October, Human Rights Watch (HRW) published a report accusing the Haftar clan of “sportswashing” after hosting a friendly European match at the newly renovated Benghazi International Stadium. ‘The concept is simple: host a major sporting event to attract positive media attention while diverting attention away from abuses,’ the rights watchdog says, adding that Libya joins the likes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in using sportswashing to launder a record of rights violations.
